# About Payback > What Payback does, who runs it, and what it is not. Payback is operated by Consumer Payback Solutions, LLC and is not a law firm. Payback is a service for people who shop online. When brands deceive you, we put money back into your pockets and hold them accountable. ## What Payback does You connect the email address your order receipts arrive at, and Payback reads those receipts to know what you bought and what you paid. We record what stores charge every day, so a fake sale has nowhere to hide. Payback catches online stores running a sale that never ends. When a customer is deceived, we ask the store for a refund, and you keep what you ordered, no returns required. Joining is free, and we cover the cost of your first refund. After that you keep 80% of any money we recover for you. If we recover nothing, you pay nothing. If we cannot get your refund, we may offer your case to lawyers who want to take it on. You are under no obligation to work with them. ## For consumer lawyers Payback also runs a case marketplace for consumer lawyers. If the store refuses to refund, the case goes to one lawyer, with the price history and communication attached.
